I found a great site on Germans in South Africa and how to go about such research if this is something you are interested in. One of my lines originated form the Berlin Missionaries. I found a link on this site that points right to information on my ancestor. Check it out you may get lucky!

I am trying to trace the ancestry of Hans Hinrich Wicht (m. Johanna Heyse) who came to South Africa in 1796. The Wichts were clock makers. In the 14th century Henry Wicht constructed the first clock mechanism consisting of four wheels, a weight and a lever. It’s counterpart is found in London’s ‘Big Ben.’ The family originated in Munich (or Munchen) and migrated southwards via Switzerland and Ibbenburen.
Any help will be appreciated

As I said on the front page, I cannot answer specific questions about family names and specific people. This site is an attempt to help people learn how to do their genealogy. Many of the posts are useful website and quick guides. Thank you for your comments. I will see what I can post in the future further on germans in South Africa, as it seems this is of much interest to many readers.
If you have not yet heard of SAG series, I will write a post soon on these books and their importance in South African research. Furthermore, here are a few links that may help with regards to German Genealogy & military info:
